The Canterbury Lawn Tennis Association’s winter competition began on the hard courts at Wilding Park on Saturday, with 12 teams—three more than last year. Beckenham n has dropped out. but Publie Hospital, Redcllffs, Barrington I, and Edgeware are

Last year's competition had a close finish when Beckenham I ■ and North Linwood, which were equal in points after two rounds, played off. Each won three matches, each won eight sets, but Beckenham I won on games by 81 to 76.

On Saturday, Beckenham began this competition well with a 5-1 win over Avonside I, but North Linwood was beaten by Barrington by 4 matches to 2. In the other matches Avonside II beat Barrington II by 6 matches to 0.
