The Canterbury Lawn Tennis Association’s winter competition began on the hard courts at Wilding Park on Saturday, with 12 teams—three more than last year. Beckenham n has dropped out. but Publie Hospital, Redcllffs, Barrington I, and Edgeware are
Last year's competition had a close finish when Beckenham I ■ and North Linwood, which were equal in points after two rounds, played off. Each won three matches, each won eight sets, but Beckenham I won on games by 81 to 76.
On Saturday, Beckenham began this competition well with a 5-1 win over Avonside I, but North Linwood was beaten by Barrington by 4 matches to 2. In the other matches Avonside II beat Barrington II by 6 matches to 0. Edgeware beat South Christchurch by 6 matches to 0, RedcliiTs beat University I by 5 matches to 1. and University II beat Public Hospital by 8 sets to 6. Results:— Beckenham v. Avonside Men's Singles. G. Freear beat A. Knight, 6-4. 6-4; M. Neill beat G. Palmer, 6-2, 1-6, 6-3. Women's Singles.—Miss M. Shanahan lost to Miss S. Petero. 3-6, 2-6; Miss R. Spooner beat Miss J. Bumstead. 6-1, 6-1. Mixed Doubles.—Freear and Miss Shanahan beat Knight and Miss Peters. 6-0/ 6-3: Neill and Miss Spooner beat Palmer and Miss Bumstead. 6-1, 7-5. Beckenham won by 5 matches to 1.
