DRUIDS’ CHURCH SERVICE

Speaker Stresses Faith

Humanitarianism was not a substitute for Christianity, the Rev. R. Hart told members of the Grand Lodge of the Canterbury United Ancient Order of Druids at the lodge’s annual church parade at the Baptist Church. Oxford terrace, yesterday.

Mr Hart said he had firsthand experience of the good the lodges did In the way of social services. Even in the Welfare State there was stall room for the services given by voluntary organisations. The State could provide money for the needy, but not the human touch which was often more important.

“The work of friendly societies such as yours has real value, but a danger emerges when good works are placed before Christian faith,” he said. “The basis for acceptance by God Is not humanitarianism but absolute faith.”

The parade marched to the church led by the Christchurch Highland Pipe Band. During the service a collection for the National Council of Churches was taken up.

Stephen Yuen Choy Lau. of the University of Canterbury, has received the master of engineering degree of the University of New Zealand —(PA.)
