ROLLING THE BARREL
Students Near City A promise that an empty 56-gallon hogshead will be filled for consumption at the end of their IOOJ-mile tramp from Timaru to Christchurch is the powerful inspiration before a party of students from the Canterbury Agricultural College, Lincoln, who are pushing the hogshead along the roads of Canterbury. The students, who left Timaru at 11.45 a.m. on Saturday. plan to arrive in Christchurch this morning in order to take part in this week’s capping activities. On their tramp they are collecting funds for the Cholmondeley Children's Memorial Home.
Yesterday, at 5.30 p.m., they were about 20 miles from Christchurch. Dressed in women’s clothing and liberally painted with cosmetics, the students presented a weird sight as they passed through Ashburton yesterday. Last week the local residents watched students from the University of Canterbury trundle a hospital bed through Ashburton’s streets.
Following behind the students and their barrel is an ancient truck carrying another hogshead equipped with a funnel through which pas-sers-by are invited to make contributions to the collection. The response is reported to bef good.
