Heaphy’s Grave Found IN-2. Press Asm.— Copyright I BRISBANE, April 30. A Wanganui farmer, Mr Vivian Horrocks, has found the grave of Major Charles Heaphy. V.C.. a New Zealand soldier and artist of the last century, in the Brisbane inner suburb of Toowong. The “Sunday Mail” columnist, Arthur Richards, said today that Mr Horrocks, who was Heaphy’s greatnephew. has visited Queensland with the New Zealand returned servicemen to take part in the Brisbane Anzac Day march for the last two years. His spare time had been spent searchring for the grave. “Now the search is over." said Richards. “He has located at Toowong an overgrown grave bearing a small cast-iron marker with the numerals 252. Records show it to be Heaphy’s resting place.” Richards said the New Zealand Government would ereet a suitable memorial The columnist said Heanhy was one of the heroes of New Zealand Mstory. Heaphy was the first "colonial” V.C. winner in history and his paintings were collected by the big galleries in New Zealand, said Richards. He had come to Australia in poor health and dried on August 3, 1881. in Brisbane, aged 59 years. Until now nobody had found the old hero’s grave.
