Debutantes Presented At G.H.S. Ball

Nineteen debutantes were presented last evening to the president of the Christchurch Girls’ High School Old Girls’ Association (Mrs R. S. W. Owen) at the association's annual debutante ball in the Winter Garden. The girls had been trained by Miss E. Cornyns Thomas, and were presented by the first assistant of the school (Miss B. A. Waller). The association colours of red, navy blue, powder blue, and silver were represented in a huge pedestal bowl of flowers in the foyer. The debutantes were presented with multi-coloured posies, a gift from the association. Mrs Owen wore a gown of smoke-blue and silver brocade. It was made with a wide, square neckline and bell-shaped skirt finished at the back waistline with a hand-made rose. Miss Waller chose a mid-night-blue brocade gown, featuring a swathed bodice, and a full-length skirt with back fullness.

The secretary of the association (Mrs W. A. Staff) wore a sapphire-blue velvet sheath frock with an overskirt lined with powder-blue taffeta. The overskirt was caught at the waist with a matching rose.

The debutantes were Misses P. Andrews, J. Barter, E. Boraman, B. Brittenden, E.

Cam. F. Cowell, A. Currie, J. Fehsenfeld. G. Heenan. C. Livingstone, A. McCarrigan. J. McClatchy, B. Miller, J. Payne. J. Pearce. M. Pearce. L. Petrie, H. Scrimgeour, and E. Thompson. Specially-invited guests included Miss Thomas, Miss Waller and Miss R. Anderson, representing the school's teaching staff, the president of the school’s parent-teacher association (Mr C. L. Harper) and Mrs Harper, and representatives from the following kindred associations: St. Margaret's Co ’ege, the Avonside Girls’ High School, Rangi-ruru School. Christchurch West High School, and the Christchurch Boys’ High School. Members of the ball committee were Mesdames Owen, L. Cox. Staff, R. E. Edwards. J. Irving, G. Miller, A. W. McWhannell. O. A. Michel and A. Lee, and Misses A. M. Bums, B. Bigg-Wither, M. Kissel. V. Crouch, L. Tucker. M. Williams, and O. L. Eslick.
