Reasonable Behaviour By Students Sought

Appeals for reasonable behaviour by students during Capping Week have been mafie by the capping controller (Mr P. Hargreaves) and the president of the Canterbury University Students’ Association (Mr A. D. L. Hooper). The appeals were printed in a special issue of the University of Canterbury’s magazine “Canta." Mr Hargreaves said: “It is' by virtue of the tolerance and good will of the public of Christchurch that we are permitted to enjoy ourselves in the city during this week. The licence which we are given should not be forgotten and every person taking part in capping activities should remember and respect this. “A line must be drawn between what the public will tolerate as student frolics and what they regard as larrikinism. It should be realised the police this year have warned they will show no tolerance to * activities which can be classed as hooligan. “As students, therefore, and mindful of the city in which our university stands, we. should at all times respect public property and, above all, respect the public themselves, particularly their representatives in authority, the police and traffic officers.”

Under the heading “Whoopee Without Wreckage,” Mr Hooper was quoted as saying that students arrested for offences during the week would receive no support from the association and would be liable to suspension. “At the request of the stu-

dents a disciplinary commit* tee was set up at the last annual meeting,” said Mr Hooper’s statement. "Its members are the capping controller, the president of the Canterbury Agricultural College association, and my* self.

“It is unlikely we will be lenient with any students brought before us.” Mr Hooper's statement said.
