LAND FOR COLLEGE

Canterbury Agricultural College has acquired an additional 63 acres of land close to Lincoln township. It lies between the college property and the Little River railway line. The sale of the land from Mr C. J. Wood to the college is still, however, subject to approval of the land Valuation Court. The newly acquired land will provide ready access for the college to the relatively isolated south - eastern section of its property, but it is likely to be of great value to the college for a number of other reasons.

In recent years the Lincoln area has been growing as one of the country’s chief agricultural research centres and there have been calls on college land for other research and state institutions. For instance, 140 acres of land was sold by the college to the Government for the Crop Research Division and the Botany Division of the Department of Scientific and Industrial Research and 40 acres oi the college’s light land property, Ashley Dene. has been leased to the Crop Research Division for light land research.

The college has also sold seven acres to the Crown for the school at Lincoln, and in the last few days it has been publicly announced that the Wool Research Organisation will be taking up a lease of six acres of college property as a site for its new laboratories. The college has also undertaken to make available to the Organisation facilities for any field trials it may wish to carryout.

The additional property, it is believed, will help to provide for the increasing research activity of the college’s own staff as well as that of associated organisations. The acquisition will also, it is believed, safeguard educational and research programmes at the college should in the future the college be required to make land available for housing expansion in the Lincoln area.
