Good A.B. Season In South Island
Figures supplied by the Broth Island Berd Improvement Association ■how that it had one of the mast successful seaseas yet with artificial breeding last spring. Cows inseminated m 25 groups in all parts of the island increased by nearly 22 per eent. to 21.878 This followed an increase of ■bout 17} per cent in the previous year. But what is most important the results of insemina* tions were the best yet The percentage ot successful inseminations at 60J was the best since the service was provided in the South Island m 1954. In that period the percentage of successful inseminations has ranged from 509 per cent in 1955 up to 59.8 In the following year. The total number of cows put in calf artificially climbed steeply from 12.992 in 1959 to 17 249 in the most recent period. In keeping with this good result the percentage of cows in calf after artificial insemination was also at its highest point
Eighty per cent, of those treated were in calf compared wi'h the best previous performance of 77 per cent, in the 1956 season Confirming that this had been the best season yet. the general manager of the association, Mr J. R. Unwin, said this week that a factor in the good results had been the use of a new extender or diluting agent for carrying the semen. This had resulted in the material keeping better over the two-day period before it was generally used. One new group was in operation in the South Island. It was at Rotomanu It incidentally had one of the best results with 85.1 per cent, of cows being pui in ealf. Only one group had a better result. That was Inangahua with 85.2. Other groups ranged down to 71 per cent.
The highest percentage ot successful inseminations was recorded by the Whataroa group. Its percentage was 70.4 with up to 100 per cent.
of successful inseminations in individual herds. Percentages of successful inseminations in groups ranged from 53.7 upwards. An important development for the South Island will be the opening of a new AB centre at Palmerston North This is expected to be functioning in time for the next spring mating season. The new centre will service the Taranaki. Wellington-Hawkes Bay and South Island associations. One of the main advantages for the South Island will be the better air services between Palmerston North and Christchurch than between this centre and Hamilton.
