TEL AVIV. April 27. The New Zealand tennis stars L. Gerrard and M. Otway took what is probably a decisive 2-0 lead today against Israel at Tel Aviv in the first round of the European Zone of the Davis Cup. In the first singles Otway beat G. Dubitzki, 6-2, 8-6, 8-0. Gerrard beat Israel’s top player. K. Da vidman. 6-1. 6-1, 3-6, 6-4, in the second singles match. Otway showed fine form in beating Dubittki in ninety minutes. His fine service and superior courtcraft gave him a great advantage. Only in the second set was he in some trouble when
Dubitzki established a 4-1 lead with some elegant tennis, but Otway came back strongly to take it to 8-6. The third set was a mere formality with the New Zealander in complete control against a tired, but plucky, opponent. Gerrard, New Zealand's champion, knocked up his 6-1, 6-1 lead against Davidman who appeared lethargic. The New 2!ealander’s flash-
ing passing shots to the corners frequently left Davidman flat-footed. In the third set, however. Davidman suddenly came to life and took it to 6-3 with a flne display of power tennis
which thrilled the 500 spectators. The final set was closely fought, with Davidman pulling up to 4-4 after Gerrard had led 4-2. But this was the local player's final effort Gerrard took the last two games to win the set and the two-hour match.
