COBBERS’ DAY RECRUITING
Army Scheme Used In Australia (NZ Press A ssoctat ion > WELLINGTON, April 28 The New Zealand Army’s “cobbers' day” system of gaining recruits has attracted interest in Australia. The idea recently made front-page news in the fortnightly newspaper. “Australian Army." Originated in Christchurch by Lieutenant-Colonel J. R. Spence, when he was in charge of the recruiting ataff for the South Island, the scheme consists of inviting young men to spend a day with the territorial force unit and see what is done in the field.
Last year the War Office adopted the scheme in Britain and it has now been given a trial by Australia with considerable success. Recruiters from the Melbourne University Regiment offered students a “try be-
fore you buy" scheme during the university’s orientation week.
Response was 27 provisionally enlisted in four days with an expected 100 per cent, staying with the regiment.
