Japan Now U.K.'s Best Customer For Tops

(Special Correspondent N.Z.P.A.)

LONDON. April 28. Japan has emerged as Britain’s biggest overseas customer for tops, according to the Board of Trade’s export returns for the first quarter of this year. These show that, between them, Japan and China took nearly six million lb during the quarter, or almost 25 per cent, of Britain's total shipments of tops to world markets. Japan took almost 3.2 million lb compared with one million lb during the first quarter of 1960. China took 2.7 million lb, Canada 2.6 million lb and Sweden 1.8 million lb. Shipments Fall The total shipments of British tops to all markets fell by about 5 per cent, to 24.4 million lb, the fall being concentrated on crossbred tops. Both Merino wool tops and hair tops did better.

The returns also show that shipments of wool cloth, particularly woollen cloth to the United States market, slumped in the first quarter compared with 1960. Last year countries were rushing their cloth to the States in an effort to beat the wool cloth tariff quota now replaced by a 38 per cent. duty. Either because that need to beat the quota barrier is removed or because the 38 per cent duty is proving a prohibitive barrier, woollen cloth exports from Britain to the States fell by 60 per cent, in the quarter from five million square yards to less than 1.0 million square yards and 27 per cent, from 2.2 million square yards to 1.6 million square yards. With Canada and West Germany also taking less cloth from Britain, total shipments of woollens fell by 20 per cent, and worsteds by 7 per cent. In the case of woollens, exports of worsted by almost exports of all types fell, apart from mixture fabrics in the 12oz to I6oz group. Among the worsted cloths, shipments of all wool worsteds above 12oz to a yard increased and so did all mixture worsteds above Boz to a yard. More To France Some of the few bright spots in.the cloth export returns were provided by increased shipments to France, one of the Common Market countries, and larger deliveries of worsteds to the Middle Eastern markets and to Venezuela.
