HUNTING IN MOUNTAINS
Visit By Two Americans Chamois, that, and deer trophies were loaded on a dusty utility truck which arrived in Cathedral square yesterday morning. Back from a successful two weeks’ hunting in mountains near Queenstown were Mr and Mrs E. H. Jewett, of Lapeer, Michigan, and their guide, Mr R. Forrester, of Rotorua. The couple arrived in New Zealand a month ago. They said they decided to come here after a friend told them about hunting and fishing in New Zealand. Before coming to the South Island, the couple fished extensively in the North Island.
“We tried it here, but without the same luck,” Mr Jewett said. "But of course the weather was not really suitable.”
Among the trophies was a disappointing eight-pointer stag. “It was the only one we saw and we shot it,” Mr Jewett said.
The couple said one of the most pleasant experiences of their tour was a flight to the West Coast. “You’ve seen Cinerama. Well, that’s it,” Mr Jewett said. “All those mountains and the bush were a beautiful sight.” Mr Jewett said he had hunted in Alaska and Canada. The sport here was “on a par, and in some places better,” he said.
Mr and Mrs Jewett and Mr Forrester returned to the North Island last night. Mr Jewett said he and his wife would take the trophies with them when they returned to Lapeer, where they have a 500-acre dry-stock farm.
