ATTRACTING TOURISTS
Cr. Guthrey’s Views "If we want to increase our tourist income we won’t do it to any great extent with T.BAL," said Cr. A. R Guthrey, chairman of the City Council’s airport committee. yesterday, when he expressed his disappointment with a “prediction” by the Minister of Civil Aviation (Mr McAlpine) that pure jet aircraft would be operated only into Mangere. Any airline history showed that 75 per cent, of its traffic came from its own nationals, Cr. Guthrey said. "And the best way to get Americans to come to New Zealand is to have an American airline flying to New Zealand "
T.EA.L. was being built up as a national industry, and properly so, Cr. Guthrey said, but T.EA.L. would cater largely for New Zealanders and Australians who had been given good service by the airline. If Qantas was allowed to flv Boeing 707 jets through Christchurch—and he could see no reason against it— Australians could be encouraged to stop over in the South Island and see the tourist attractions here. Cr Guthrey said.
He repeated that there was no reason why Qantas should not fly Boeing 707’s th-ough Christchurch now When the airport committee meets next Wednesday, Cr. Guthrey will ask it to invite the Minister to meet the committee at the airport, along with other organisations and individuals who took part in the recent meeting which protested against delay in having Christchurch designated an airport for pure jets. “There is no doubt that the resolutions passed by the meeting will be put to the Minister very strongly,” Cr. Guthrey added.
