SUICIDE BID BY RUSSIAN
Asylum In U.K. Refused (NZ Press Assn.—Copyright) (Rec. 8 p.m.) LONDON. April 28 A Russian tried to commit suicide at the gates of the British Embassy in Moscow after he had been refused political asylum, the “Daily Mail” said today. The incident was not mentioned in the Moscow press and -there was no report on his condition in hoospital. The “Daily Mail” said the Russian entered the embassy unnoticed by police guards at midday on Tuesday. He told his story to officials, but was then told: “You must leave.” He was escorted out. At the embassy gates armed bluecoated Soviet police waited.
Suddenly the Russian drew a knife from his coat, slashed his throat and fell unconscious. An ambulance rushed him to hospital.
Behan Fined. Brendan Behan, the Irish playwright, was fined 200 dollars today when convicted of two charges of assault, and one of creating a disturbance In passing sentence, the Magistrate said: “The accused is a sick man—a very sick man. I have no intention of making a martyr of him. He should know what would happen when he takes a drink—he goes berserk.”— Toronto. April 27.
