CONIFERS FOR TUB-PLANTS.— There is nothing more decorative than a pair of well-chosen conifers for placing on either side of the doorway. An attractive tub of cedar board, or teak in its natural colour, or a large earthenware container, add beauty to the foliage with their contrasting colours. Suitable plants include such varieties of Lawson’s cypress, as Ellwoodii, Fletcheri, minima, and filifera aurea; varieties of the Hinoki cypress, like Crippsii, tetragona aurea, and nana gracilis, and many others. Even quite large growing plants can be used. This plant of Cedrus deodara does not look out of place on a large courtyard. It will eventually need to be replaced as it grows larger, but the special “built-in” concrete tub avoids any danger from too strong a root-system.
