Murray Named As Captain In the Frey berg Rosebowl tournament at Napier next! month Canterbury will bei represented by a team in: which only one member, G. P Vesty (Timarui, is a newcomer. The team has an excellent leader in the New Zealand representative, R. C. Murray,! who will be both captain and! No. 1 in the playing order. It will be his eighth successive appearance in this contest. The team, in playing order, is:— R. C. Murray (Russley), captain. I. S. Harvey (Timaru). R. E. Clements (Waitikiri), K. D. Foxton (Russley), G. P. Vesty (Timarui, B. A. Colquhoun! (Russley). The emergency isl B. L. Clegg (Waitikiri), Mr C. M. Turner, of Rangi- i ora. has been appointed man-i ager. He is the immediate | past-chairman of the manage- i ment committee of the Can-! terbury Provincial Golf ! Association. The team was announced yesterday by the selectors, Messrs C. J. Ward and J. O’Gorman. Murray's Record Murray has been one o 4 the outstanding competitors in rosebowl contests, and his i form this year suggests that] he will add to his record. I In his 42 rosebowl matches he| has been beaten only nine; times. He has won 27 j matches—64.2B per cent.—! and halved six. From his first appearance; in 1954. Murray played in! the Otago team for five years ! As No. 2 player in 1958 he| achieved the rare feat of; winning all six matches. He lias been No. 2 player for Canterbury for the last two years, winning nine and halving one of his 12 games. Harvey, selected as No. 2 player, previously repre(sented Canterbury in 1958. when he occupied top position but scored only one win. Last year he was No. 2 for Wellington, joint winner of the contest. By gaining selection as No. 3. Clements has equalled M. W. Stanley’s record of most appearances for Canterbury in the contest —seven. Clements first played for Canterbury in 1954 and after six successive appearance missed selection last year. Sixth Appearance A match player of proven ability. Foxton will be making! his sixth successive appear-; ance for Canterbury. He has scored 20 points from his 30 rosebowl matches. Colquhoun will be representing Canterbury for the first time, but has had long experience as an Otago representative. Between 1954 and 1959 he played in five rosebowl tournaments. Vesty is a cool and efficient player with sustained good form. For the last twm years he has. been emergency for the rosebowl team. The records of the players in rosebowl tournaments are:— p. W. L. PROFESSIONAL TOURNEY Course Record Smashed (N.Z.P.A -Heuter—Copyright} LONDON. April 26. The Manchester professional Jack Wilkshire smashed the 10-year-old record of the Beeston Fields course at Nottinghamshire today by four strokes. He scored 63—nine under the standard scratch score of 72. This gave Wilkshire a three-strokes lead in the opening round of the new Cox Moore £3600 72-hole tournament. The tournament started today at the Beeston Fields and Wollaton Park courses. The New Zealander Bob Charles and Bob Tuohy of Australia started shakily and finished their rounds well i behind the leaders. I Charles had a 72 at Wollai ton Park. He made a good; recovery after dropping strokes at the first four holes. The leading first round scores at Beeston Fields were:— 63: 3. W. Wilkshire: 66: R. L. Moffitt, K. A. Mac-; Donald; 67: B. J.
