BOOKS FOR LIBRARY
Bequest By Recluse “The Press” Special Service AUCKLAND, April 27. Mr Gilbert Allen Rawson, a recluse, former rationalist, Hebrew scholar, and botanist, who died in Auckland last August at the age of 80, has bequeathed to the Auckland University library more than 2000 books—a collection probably unique in New Zealand. The books range through rationalism, free thinking, standard classics, mythology, evolution, and many branches of science to “The Decameron" and “Don Quixote.” In the words of the university librarian, Mr F. A. Sandail: “Many of the works are now unobtainable, and they form a remarkable collection. Many form useful background material for the study of people, beliefs, or scientific development “The library has indeed been fortunate to obtain these books,” he said.
It was only because of a difference of opinion with the rationalists in the 1930’s that Mr Rawson bequeathed the books to the University instead of to the New Zealand Rationalist Association.
