CAR SAFETY BELTS

- A.A.C. Supports Innovation Safety belts for motor drivers are strongly favoured by the council of the Automobile Association (Canterbury). It will consider fitting them in all the association’s vehicles and also means of encouraging their general use.

The important point was to ensure that safety belts were securely anchored to a big plate under the floor, said the president (Mr E. R. Casbolt). Anything less secure was worse than nothing. “As a safety measure we should support this development to the hilt,” said Mr G. W. Tench.

“Perhaps we could install belts in all our own vehicles,” said Mr Casbolt. “Will you tell the patrols?” asked Mr B. F. Bicknell, amid laughter. It was agreed that the roads committee consider the whole issue.

Had any member seen a safety belt for sale? asked Mr J. R. Mating. The laek of push over this item in the retail trade seemed to be a restricting factor, he said. Would ' the average driver bother putting on the straps just to go Into town? asked Mr J. A. Paton.

“That is where most accidents occur,” said Mr Casbolt. “After all, you would not go out without doing up your braces.”
