ROADING PLAN
Discussion By I A.A. Council The National Roads Board’s 10-year-plan is “all very fine" but it does not contain a single promise, according to three members of the council of the Automobile Asst ciation (Canterbury). Others at the council meeting last evening said the board should be given “a fair go.” District details of the plan (reported last week) had > been listed at a meeting last ■ evening when Mr A. C. Perry ■ asked: “Where are the api pendices? “This preview paints a I very pretty picture about nothing in hard fact.” Mr Perry said. The plan was i valueless without the ap- > pendices giving positive dates i for works. “I agree that it's a bit departmental with little given away,” said Mr J. A. Paton, who is an A-A. district roads council representative. Motorists had only one representaI tive on the National Roads ' Board, which was quite out of proportion to the funds contributed in motorists’ taxation. he said. “Motorists contribute a lot of money and are entitled to information,” said Mr E. McCarrigan. Stronger representation on national and district roads organisations would secure better information.
“But surely the National Roads Board works for motorists as a whole,” said the president (Mr E. R. Casbolt).
“This is, I think, the only country in the world with a national roads fund. We have got something which others envy, and I think we should give the board a fair go,” said the secretary (Mr E. S. Palliser).
“I agree that there has been an enormous improvement on the past,” said Mr Paton, Both motor unions were pressing for two private motorists* representatives on the National Roads Board, said Mr E. C. Champion.
