SHORTAGE OF TEACHERS
Relief Promised By Minister (From Our Own Reporter) GREYMOUTH, April 27. “I have some good news for you, and this is the first time the figures have been publicly released,” said the Minister of Education (Mr Tennent), in an address at the Greymouth Technical High School this afternoon. He was referring to an earlier remark by the principal (Mr P. A. Muirheadi in connexion with a shortage of teaching staff.
The Minister said that there were more than 3100 teachers enrolled at the teachers’ training colleges, so that relief will be forthcoming for primary schools. In regard to the shortage
of between 700 and 900 teachers for post-primary schools, the Education Department had advertised in England and no fewer than 1887 inquiries had been received. said Mr Tennent. Of that number. 600 had made written application to come to New Zealand.
In addition to England. 120 inquiries had been received from other countries, including 60 from the United States, added the Minister, and, as they were al! possessed of good degrees, the outlook was most encouraging.
