UNIVERSITIES IN AUSTRALIA
£60,000 A Month On Building University building in both Sydney and Melbourne is now proceeding at the rate of £60.000 a month—about two and a half times the rate in New Zealand, the Vicechancellor (Dr. F. J. Llewellyn) told the Canterbury University Council. Dr. Llewellyn visited Australia last week to call upon Sir Leslie Martin, chairman of the Australian Universities’ Commission, which performs much the same functions as the University Grants Committee of New Zealand. He said he was comforted to see that the New Zealand committee (of which he is the new chairman) had to deal with only one government, whereas the Australian commission had to maintain a "paper war” with the federal government and all the state governments. Dr. Llewellyn also called on Miss Mary Erskine, sister of the late Mr J. A. Erskine, who last year bequeathed £25.000 to the University of Canterbury to finance overseas travel for promising staff and students and also to bring notable scholars to Canterbury.
