ADDINGTON MARKET Small Yardings In Most Sections Of Sale
With little stock arriving by rail after the Anzac Day holiday yardings were fairly light at Addington market yesterday for this week’s one-day sale. Though the store sheep sale occupied only an hour and a half and there was a large gallery following the sale store lambs were quoted easier by Is to 2s. Smaller entries in both the fat lamb and fat sheep sections resulted in increased competition for quality. Both young wethers and good butchers’ ewes appeared to firm by about 2s a head. Most classes of lambs opened on a dearer note, but as the sale progressed there was a slackening of interest in medium to heavy sorts. A feature of the store cattle section was the sale of Hanmer steer calves to £3l 3s 6d and heifer calves to £2B 3s 6d. Heifer calves met a sound sale at fractionally dearer rates. Steer calves firmed after a weaker opening. With the prospect of a small entry, fat steers started on a dearer note but they eased back as the yarding built up as the sale progressed.
STORE SHEEP The store sheep entry was down to a mere shadow of its former self. The tally was only 1875, compared with 7293 last week, and the sale was over in an hour and a half. The offering included 1298 lambs, compared with 4261 last week, and there were also 70 two-tooth ewes (293 last week), 178 older ewes (587), and 329 wethers (2138). For lambs and also some of the wethers the market tended to be a little easier. The lamb offering was of very mixed quality with an occasional pen of well-grown sheep, but with a fairly large proportion of small and inferior quality pens only partlyfilled. Though the sale was followed by a relatively large gallery someone remarked that there were as many pro r spective buyers as sheep—the market tended to be easier by Is to 2s. Apart from the generally unattractive appearance of the offering, the colder turn in the weather after the recent summer-like spell could have been a factor in the decline in values. Best shorn Romney wether lambs realised from 41s 6d to 455, with average at 34s 6d to 365. and good woolly sorts ranged from 37s 6d to 41s 6d. with average at 29s 6d. The pick of the woolly fine wool wether lambs brought from 38s to 40s, with good shorn fine wool lambs making to about 365. Small and plain wether lambs sold between about 20s to 275. Romney wether lambs sold up to 45s for the tops of a Line of 260 good shorn sheep from J. D. Gallagher (Rakahuri), which ranged from 41s ttd upwards. Top price for fine wool lambs was 4Os for 29 Merinos from the estate James Stevenson (Flaxton), who also had halfb reds at 38s. There was an odd pen of useful sheep in the ewe lamb section, with woolly Romneys making to 525, and good fine wool woolly lambs ranging from 44s to 50s. Otherwise the bulk of the ewe lambs were of not very attractive quality, or were small and sold mainly between 20s and 30s for shorn sorts. The_ top price for ewe lambs was 52s for 70 Romney cross from R. A. Thomson -(Tui Creek). Next best price was 50s for 88 halfb reds from the estate James Stevenson (Flaxton). Fat lamb numbers dropped • sharply to 2211 head. the i smallest entry for several > weeks. Last week the offer- ’ ing totalled 3340, and there • were 4401 the previous week. Quality was generally quite • good, with fewer indifferent small lambs penned, and the 1 bulk of the entry comprised ■ good, useful medium-weights. 1 The market opened on a • firmer note, with most classes J dearer by about 2s a head on last week's generally easier . values Throughout the sale , the small and lighter sorts • maintained an even tone f which was established by freezing company operation and a . small amount of grazier bid- ’ ding. - The medium-weight lambs • sold on the improved level ; until the latter stages of the - sale, when they tended to lapse ’ back to last week’s closing rates, and the heavier lambs, while being kept up by the shortage of wethers, tended to ’ follow a similar trend. ? Shorn lambs met a very sound sale, and some of the , top pens looked to be rela- ; tively dearer than comparable woolly lines. The market was topped by J. L. FAT SHEEP The fat sheep entry was also much smaller and totalled 2199 head, compared with 2913 last week and 4287 the week before. This resulted in increased competition for the better quality pens. .. The wether section generally recovered all of last week’s weakening and the best of the younger sorts appeared about 2s to 3s a head dearer. The older wethers also improved to the level of a fortnight ago. Recently shorn wethers met a better sale. For ewes there was a general improvement of 2s to 3s a head and with the small entry there was much more competition than last week. Younger ewes also had a sounder sale at improved rates. The top price for wethers was gained by Clarkson Bros. (Mt. Hutt), who received 85s Id for seven and 84s Id for five. W. H. Mahnke (Greenpark) sold a pen at 84s Id and N. E.
