OVER-AGE PLAYERS IN UNDER-20 TEAM
Criticism of the action of some local soccer dubs in nominating, for the provincial under 20 and under 18 teams, players who wore above those age limits, was expressed at a meeting of the management committee of the Canterbury Football Association last evening. "Am I expected to check the dates of birth of players who have been nominated by clubs for the Canterbury under 20 and under 18 teams, or are the clubs expected to check that their nominees are under the age limits?” asked Mr R. Storer, selector of the Canterbury under 20 and under 18 teams. After the Canterbury under 20 team had been picked for the match against Otago this Saturday, said Mr Storer, he had heard that some of the players were over the age limit. He had found that this was true of two of the players chosen, and he had had to replace them, although the team had already been announced in the newspapers. It was clearly the duty of the clubs to see that their nominees were under the age limits, said the chairman (Mr J. Smith). Other members of the management committee agreed that this was clearly not the duty of the selector, who expected to rely on all the nominations being in order. Mr W. W. Carruthers: One player nominated for the under 20 team this season was actually 25. Mr Storer had played him in one of his trials for nearly half the match until I told him. Mr Smith: The same player was nominated two years ago for the under 18 team. Mr Storer: A player who knows that he is above the age limit should not turn out in the trials, anvhow. New Team The under 20 team will now be: — A. Chapman: A. Westwood. M. Rennet!; W. Young. W. McKenna. I. Laby: J. Fringa. C Davidson. C. Hicks, D. Torkington. B. Sayers. A. Bishop (reserve). McKenna will captain the team, with Davidson as vicecaptain. Mr Storer was appointed manager. W. Rodger and P. RennelJ were appointed captain and vice-captain of the Canterbury senior team to meet Otago in the first of the home-and-away series of Jones Cup matches in Dunedin on Saturday. Mr Smith was appointed manager. Mr T. C. Gottermeyer dissented when the senior team was brought up for approval by ♦he committee. "It's an experimental team. I suppose." said Mr Gottermeyer "If I went out of this room tonight after voting for the team I would not feel happy about it.” Mr Gottermeyer asked that his vote against approval of the team be recorded.
An appeal for rafaraea for matches under the control of the junior ananagement committee was made by Mr A. Fraaer. “We have only eight confirmed referee, lor SO matches on Saturday.” Mid Mr Fraser. "There must be some players from the fifth division upwards who would not mind 20 minutes each way In the morning.” Saturday’s Draw The soccer draw for April 29 (all matches starting at 145 unless stated) la:— First Division.—flange.
