Tributes to Mr W. H. Gillespie. Minister of Agriculture. were paid at yesterday’s meeting of the provincial executive of North Canterbury Federated Farmers by the president (Mr J. F. G Blakely) and by Mr L. E Taylor (Oxford). A motion of sympathy with his relatives was carried, and members stood in silence as a mark of respect. Mr Blakely said that Mr Gillespie’s life of unselfish service to the community and the country should be an inspiration and example to them all. Mr G. Potter was elected a life member of the Christchurch Returned Services Association Tin Hat Club at the club’s annual meeting last evening. Mr Potter has be'-.i leader of the club’s orchestra for the last eight years, and has recently resigned.
Mr D. Horne, assistant secretary of the North Canterbury Hospital Board, has been appointed acting-secre-tary during the absence overseas of the secretary •Mr J G. Laurenson). Tribute to the work of Mr J. L. Hewland, who has moved to Wellington, was expressed at a meeting of Town Hall Promotion's general committees last evening. Mr Hewland’s resignation from the committee was accepted, and a letter will be sent expressing the organisation’s appreciation of his work. Members of the North Canterbury Hospital Board stood yesterday as a mark of respect to Mr E. C. Powell, who reported the board's meetings for "The Press” for many years up to the time of his recent death. The chairman (Dr. L C. L. Averill) said that Mr Powell had always been a good friend of the board. The meeting passed a motion of sympathy with Mr Powell's relatives. Mr P. J. SkeUerup's resignation as chairman of the publicity committee was received at a meeting of Town Hall Promotion’s general committee last evening. A letter will be sent to Mr Skellerup expressing the organisation’s appreciation of his services in that office since its inception. Mr T. Tanner has been appointed principal bacteriologist at the Princess Margaret Hospital. Grant to Heritage.—A grant of 10 guineas was made to Heritage (Canterbury) Inc., by the Christchurch Returned Services’ Association Tin Hat Club at the club’s annual meeting last evening.
Captain K. R. Cooke, commanding officer of the Southern District Company. Royal New Zealand Army Service Corps, has been awarded the junior officers' efficiency trophy for 1960-61. Captain Croke graduated from Duntroon Military College in 1955 and served in Malaya with the Ist Battalion, New Zealand Regiment, as officer commanding transport. He was adjutant at Waiouru before being appointed to his present post at Addington. Mr P. W Cotter, assistant surgeon of the North Canterbury Hospital Board, has been appointed senior surgeon. Mr W. O. S. Phillipps becomes assistant surgeon in place of Mr Cotter. Mr R- E. Worts, of Wellington, has been re-elected unopposed for a further term of two years as president of the New Zealand Federation of Master Printers.
