Mr G. R. Lakmg. the newlyappointed Ambassador for New Zealand to the United States, left Whenuapai last night to ake up his appointment in Washington. He was accompanied by Mrs Laking —<P.A.)

The Canterbury University Council on Monday paid tributes to Mr W. H. Gillespie’s service to higher education. The Chancellor (Mr C H. Perkins) said Mr Gillespie had been chairman of the board of governors of Canterbury Agricultural College. Lincoln, for many years and also a member of the Senate of the University of New Zealand. He had therefore given outstanding public service to both the universities and to agriculture, which was his chief concern. Colonel Sir Thomas Butler has been appointed resident Governor of the Tower of London. Sir Thomas Butler, who was military adviser to the United Kingdom High Commissioner in Wellington, left earlier this year for England on completing his period of duty here.—(P.A.)

The Riccarton Borough Council on Monday expressed its regret at the deaths of Mr E. C. Powell, a Christchurch journalist, Mr E. W. White, the borough solicitor since 1945. and. Cr. W. J. Cowles, a member of the Christchurch City Council.

Professor G. A. Knox has been nominated as Canterbury University representative on the new Nations! Committee on Oceanographic Research.

The service of Miss Margaret Swarbrick as secretary to the Vice-Chancellor of the University of Canterbury was praised by the Chancellor (Mr C. H. Perkins) on Monday Her ability was outstanding and for years she had been exceedingly helpful as minute secretary to the university council. Miss Swarbrick will become private secretary to Dr. F. J, Llewellyn in his new post as chairman of the University Grants Committee Mr Alan M. Brown, of Wanganui, has been appointed by Rotary International to be New Zealand's extension counsellor for the South-east Asia region. He will take up his new post in June for one year In July, he will attend a session in Hong Kong with fellow counsellors
