Wellington Teachers To Refuse Overtime
(New Zealand Press Association)
WELLINGTON, April 25. Post-primary teachers in' ' the Wellington area would j not teach outside the regula- , tion 10 half-daya a week, the i Wellington regional organise- 1 tion of the Post-Primary t Teachers’ Association said in : a statement yesterday. The statement said this de- 1 cision would be implemented < if overtime rates of pay, the ■ subject of negotiation for ] more than a year, were not ■ satisfactorily adjusted. I “The teachers’ complaint is that at the time of last year’s margins increase for all State services, the overtime rate for teachers, far from being increased, was, in i fact, lowered. The penalty thus imposed has been con- i tinued while the national : executive of the Post-Primary i Teachers’ Association has i been negotiating with the i Education Department,” said i the statement. i
normal teaching week is of 10 half-days and a great number of teachers teach up to an allowed maximum of two extra half-days in evening school classes. A large part of the burden of the rapidly growing extension of technical education in trade and profession and hobby work for adults falls oj. the post-primary teacher —indeed, its very success depends upon his continued willingness to carry the extra burden of work.”
