Quinnat Salmon

Sir,—On April 13 “The Press” reported Mr Hughey as stating in the acclimatistion society council, when discussing a proposal to send quinnat salmon specimens to the United States for positive identification, that "there are five species of quinnat and these could not be readily identified.” The quinnat is a distinct and easily recognised species of Pacific salmon and the above statement implies an impossibility as there cannot be five species within a single species. Actually there are six species of Pacific salmon but systematic classification is not a qualification 1 of acclimatisation society councillors and Mr Hughey may have heard that there are five varieties or races with the identity of quinnat but differing in habits. Sending specimens to America for identification is unlikely to be definite as the fisheries people there are not strong on these fishes and are unlikely to have the data for fine classification.—Yours, etc., CLEMENT STOKELL. April 24, 1961.
