Sportsman’s Notebook NEW SOCCER CLUB HAS SUCCESSFUL START

The newest soccer club in Christchurch is also the one with the longest name—the Shirley Roys* High School Old Boys’ Association Football Club. The members get round this rather formidable title, however, by referring to theoiaelvM as the Shirley Old Batys, At the moment, the Shirley Old Boys’ Club is not a very well-known one, since it bat only one team, which appears in the fifth division. Nevertheless, it has plenty of supporters prepared to tum out to watch its performances. and the expectation is that after a few more years when successive groups of footballers have grown up through the achool and joined the club, it may make a contribution to the game equal to that of the long-estab-lished High School Old Boys’

and Technical College Boys. Although the chib la an« open one, not restricted to, old boys of the school. all the 18 present player* ar* in , fact former pupil*, and the * club colours are almost the same as the school soccer uniform. ** • - Trophy Presentation The Canterbury Table tennis Association will hold its official opening night tomorrow evening at th* Setwyn Street Hall. Shield* and eups won in last season’s winter and summer inter-club competition will be presented, together wtlh certificate* to members of the winning teams. * • • Badminton Competition The Canterbury Badminton Association may this season consider the playing of a grade for men only. All grades in inter-club badminton in the past have been contested by teams containing an equal number of men and women. However, some clubs at the association's annua! meeting this week indicated that they had far more men than women players, and that they were therefore unable to accommodate all these in inter-club team*. * * • Soccer Tour The members of the English soccer team which is to tour the Dominion, starting next month. will, have already built up a good combination by the time they reach New Zealand. They will play matches in Kuala Lumpur. Singapore, and Hong Kong on their way. and plans are also under way for a match in Sydney. This last match will not be played unless the world controlling body first lifts its ban on the Australian football association. which at present bars Australian teams from any world competition. • • • Table Tennis So far 123 team* have been entered in the Canterbury Table Tennis Association’* inter-club competitions, which are to start on Monday. Last year the total was 134 teams, but this year’s figure may yet be further raised by new entries. The largest club is Avonside, with 22 teams entered, folowed by University, with 10 teams.
