Boxing Johnson Beats Von Clay

Harold Johnson retained his National Boxing Association version of the world light heavy-weight title in Philadelphia tonight after knocking Von Clay to the canvas four times. The referee stopped the contest after 2min 28sec of the second round. Johnson, now in his sixteenth year of professional fighting, was making the first defence of the title he won last February. Clay was making hi® title bld in his nineteenth professional fight. Basilio To Retire (N.Z. Press Assn.—Copyright) SYRACUSE (New York), _ April 24. Carmen Basilio, the former welter-weight and middleweight boxing champion, today announced his retirement from the rina. The 34-year-old fighter, who was involved in 11 title fights in 79 bouts, made this decision following his loss to Paul Pender in a 15-round fight in Boston on Saturday. Of his 79 professional fights. Basilio won 56. lost 16, and drew seven.
