FACILITIES ON HOLMBURN
Reply To Critics Of Coaster The ship Holmburn is large enough and adequately equipped for transporting sheep from the Chatham Islands, according to the managing director of Holm and Company (Mr J F. Holm) Mr Holm commented on a reply to a letter to the editor of “The Press’.’ in which the secretary of the Canterbury Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (Mr D. I. Williams). criticised the Holmburn. Mr Williams said any cruelty to sheep was the reJ sponsibllity of the Islanders who used the Holmburn—"a vessel not by any means large enough, nor adequately equipped, to properly protect the animals should rough weather be encountered " The original correspondent said he had heard ft was “a sickening sight” when the ship was unloaded recently Mr Holm said: “It is obvious that neither your correspondent nor Mr Williams know anything about the carriage of livestock by sea. Holmbum is by all world standards not only large enough to carry sheep but also eminently suitable and adequately and specially equipped. "I shall be happy to discuss the matter with Mr Williams and your correspondent, if the latter will divulge his name, any time they have any helpful suggestions to make. “Over the last 20 years our losses of sheep on this trade have been a fraction of 1 per cent., which is a record we think will speak for Itself."
