Waimate GREEN BELT IN DISTRICT

Suggestion Made To County Council

The establishment, on a long-term view, of some form of a green belt outside the built-up areas "so that we will not have great sprawling settlements" was mentioned by Mr N. A. Rattray (chairman) at the Waimate County Council meeting on Monday. Mr Rattray was reporting on a meeting witn the borough on their joint town planning scheme. The idea of the green belt was an attempt over a long term to confine residential areas for more economical and efficient servicing with amenities. The green belt would not be just outside the borough. “We will be getting advice on how far out we should go,” he said. At the ward meeting in Timaru on March 29 the counties had approved the formation of a South Canterbury local body committee and he said Waimate should agree in principle provided there was not to be any elaborate set-up. Hydatid Control Mr Rattray then spoke of the wonderful response to the hydatid control work in the district. It was such that all could take great pride. Of 813 dog owners who had been asked to attend at dosing strips 799 had responded. That meant that only 14 had been unable to attend at the appointed time.
