HYDATIDS IN COUNTY
Reports To Council On Incidence Of seven areas in which one of the Ashburton County Council’s hydatid control Officers (Mr B. W. Taylor) dosed dogs, four showed increases in the incidence of true hydatids, and the other three showed increases in false hydatids, compared with the last round of dosing. Wakanui, Pendarves, Dorie and Dromore showed increases in true hydatids, and Chertsey, Rakaia and Winchmore showed increases in false hydatids, Mr Taylor reported. Nine dogs infected with true hydatids on this round of dosing had been re-dosed, and none showed a positive test on re-dosing, he said. Four hundred and sixty dog owners presented 1017 dogs for dosing, the result being 1 per cent, incidence of true hydatids, and 5.9 per cent, false hydatids. Mr G. Saunders, the county’s other hydatid control officer, reported that 617 dogs had been dosed, resulting in the incidence of 1.1 per cent, true hydatids and 8.7 per cent, false hydatids. Nine dogs found to be infected with true hydatids had been re-dosed and were now free from infection, Mr Saunders said. Cr A. D. McLaughlan said he was certain some of the increase in the incidence of hydatids was because of the number of new dogs which came into the county. “We farmers do not realise the traffic done in dogs," he said.
