MAN OVERCOME BY SMOKE

When units from the Sydenham and Central fire stations arrived at a small fire in a flat above 372 Colombo street at 5.50 p.m. yesterday they found that the occupant of the flat, an invalid, had been overcome by smoke. The occupant, Clifford Boyd Ogilvie, was rescued by firemen who called a St. John ambulance. Mr Ogilvie had oxygen administered to him during the trip to the Christchurch Public Hospital and his condition was reported to be satisfactory late last evening. Mr Ogilvie is thought to have been smoking in bed, as bedding and furniture near the bed were damaged by the fire. The fire, which was quickly extinguished, was noticed by a passer-by who called the fire brigade.
