EAST AFRICAN ANGLICANS

Work Outlined By Bishop

“There are about 1,000.000 members of the Church of England in East Africa.” said the Bishop of Central Tankanyika (the Rt. Rev A. St an way) in Christchurch. His diocese, one of 16, covers 250.000 square miles. “Missionary work has ceased to revolve round mission stations, which are now merely places where institutional work is developed. They have been replaced by a system of parishes and rural deaneries led by Africans,” said Bishop Stanway. In the diocese of Central Tanganyika there were 57 African clergy, each in charge of 10 to 30 churches.

The European staff of the diocese numbers 100. of whom Bishop Stan way and more than 60 others are Australians. Included among the 10 New Zealanders is Archdeacon Wiggins, of Christchurch. Literacy in Tanganyika is increasing, Bishop Stanway said. One-third of the school-age children are now reading in schools. A college in Uganda has attained the status of a university college, and Tanganyika has set aside funds for its own university. “The New Zealand church supports some of our work in Tanganyika and I have come here to tell about it,” he said.

Bishop Stanway will return to Christchurch later this month after visiting flioceses in the North Island.
