HISTORIC PLACES IN ANTARCTICA
N.Z. Interest In Preservation
fNew Zealana Press Association/ WELLINGTON. May 6. Mr C. M. Bowden, who is chairman of both the Ross Sea Committee and of the National Historic Places Trust, has sought the view of the latter body on the assumption of responsibility for the preservation of places of historic interest in the Antarctic, particularly huts of former explorers at Cape Evans. Cape Royds, and Hut Point. - Reporting to a meeting of the Ross Sea Committee today, Mr Bowden said the trust was quite interested, but must first ascertain whether the Ross Dependency was within the scope of its activities. In any case, the matter was one for discussion with the Government. Mr Bowden said that Mr A. S. Helm, secretary of the Ross Sea Committee, had also suggested that maintenance should be extended to four memorial crosses in the Antarctic, and these would also be included in any proposals which might be made. “I am sure we would receive the utmost ■ assistance from the American authorities if we undertook the maintenance and preservation of hutments there,” Mr Bowden said.
