TRAFFIC SIGNS REMOVED
Five Found In River
Five Christchurch City Council traffic signs were missing from their poles yesterday morning. Later three similar signs and two others were found in the Avon river between the Antigua street and Worcester street bridges. After a motorist had reported to the council’s traffic depot that two compulsory stop signs had been removed at the . intersection of Holly and Springfield roads, an officer discovered two similar signs in the river on the course used later in the day by Canterbury University College students in their annual river bicycle race.
The officer also found a road works sign with two lanterns attached, a 30 miles an hour sign, and a bus stop sign in the same place. A senior officer of the traffic department reported that two bus stop signs and a no-park-ing sign were missing from the vicinity of Cave Rock, Sumner, but no 30 miles an hour sign had yet been reported missing.
The officer said that it was impossible to say if the signs found in the river were those that had been removed from their poles as the signs were not numbered. It was, however, unlikely that the signs could have been obtained in any other way. Occasionally extra signs were erected temporarily but were always returned to stock. All the signs had been replaced promptly, said the officer. The removal of the stop signs at Holly road could have caused a danger to motorists used to the right of way across the intersection.
