34,000-YEAR OLD SKELETON

(N.Z. Press Association—Copyright) WASHINGTON. May 5. The Smithsonian Institution announced today that an adult human skeleton had been found in a layer more than 34.000 years old in the Shanidar Cave, in Northern Iraq. No exact age could be given for the skeleton. The discovery was reported by Dr. Ralph Solecki, archeologistleader of a Smithsonian-sponsor-ed expedition to Iraq. Dr. Solecki previously had found a child’s skeleton 26 feet below the surface of the cave. A recent study of the child’s teeth, the announcement said, indicated it belonged to a new form of Mousterian or upper Pleistocene man. “Since the newly-discovered adult comes from a higher level in the cave (14i feet below the surface in the top Mousterian layer), it may represent a still different type of man,” the announcement said.
