I Mr Smith was accompanied by ’two other members of the department, Messrs E. P. McClintock and J. F. Murphy. The party will Ibe engaged in a review of trade in Wellington this week. The delegation was met by the Australian Trade Commissioner at Auckland, Mr B. G. Dawson, who accompanied the party to Wellington later in the day. The visit was mainly to discuss the progress of trade between the two countries following talks held in March last year between the Prime Minister (Mr Holland) and the Australian Prime Minister (Mr Menzies), said Mr Smith. “In the last 12 months.” he said, “New Zealand exports to Australia have showed a marked irise, particularly in pulp, paper i products, fish and frozen vegetables. Australia has shipped more [iron, steel, motor vehicles and ,other manufactured goods. j “The record of this 12 months demonstrates our goodwill, and in these trade talks, we will do our best to see how any problems can be solved.
“Under the necessity for positive measures to increase export finance, Australia has reviewed her trade promotion activities in important markets and the opening of a trade commissioner’s office in Christchurch soon illustrates her confidence in the longterm expansion of trade between our two countries,’’ said Mr Smith.
