U.S. ACTIONS IN SUEZ CRISIS
Stevenson Blames Republicans (N.Z. Press Association Copyright) WASHINGTON, May 5. Mr Adlai Stevenson today accused the Eisenhower Administration of having precipitated last year’s Middle East crisis by failing to understand the importance of the Suez Canal to Britain and France. In an interview with a reporter, Mr Stevenson, the Democratic Presidential candidate in 1952 and 1956, said he believed next year’s campaign for control of the United States Congress might be decided on the issue of the Eisenhower Administration’s handling of foreign policy. If it were, the Democrats would retain control of the Senate and House of Representatives, he said. “As I see it, the people are now deeply disturbed by what they regard as an effort of the Republicans to place domestic matters above all others in their consideration of world problems,” Mr Stevenson said. “These Republicans are the people who did not understand the importance of the Suez Canal to Britain and France. “They did not understand the importance of Britain and France to us. “Therefore, they precipitated the Middle East crisis.”
