Mr P. A. Menon, High Commissioner for India, will arrive in Christchurch today for a visit of two days. This is his third visit to the Dominion. Last year he visited New Zealand in October, when he presented his credentials and again in December as India’s alternate leader to the Ministerial meetings of the Colombo Plan Consultative Committee.
Mr James Mudie, British Broadcasting Corporation representative for Australia and New Zealand, will make his first visit to the Dominion this month. He will arrive at Auckland on May 14 and leave from Christchurch on May 24. In Wellington, he will have discussions with the Director of Broadcasting (Mr W Yates).— (P.A.)
Mr Robert Gladwell, a young farmer from Yolla, Tasmania, began a four months’ tour of New Zealand when he arrived at Christchurch airport on Friday. After spending two weeks in North Canterbury he will visit various parts of New Zealand, from Western Southland to Northland. Mr Gladwell, whose trip is sponsored Ly the Bank of New Zealand, is president of the Far North West Divisional Council of Junior Farmers’ Clubs and a member of the State council. He assists his father on a 640-acre sheep farm. Mr D. J. Varcoe, who has been postmaster at North Avon for the last six years, has been promoted to relieving postmaster for the Christchurch district. Mr Varcoe was previously postmaster at Hororata.
Mr I. V. Sage, of Taumarunui, has been awarded a scholarship at the University of Wisconsin. It is the first such scholarship awarded in New Zealand. Mr Sage, who is 26, is a Master of Arts wi h honours in geography.— (P.A.)
