Tisred Clearly Superior
The Invercargill hurdler Tisred had the Longbeach Hurdles won at Ashburton on Saturday from the time he ranged alongside Milling Bay in the lead going to the second last flight. He was clear at the last jump and won decisively by a length. Milling Bay was unchallenged for second, finishing six lengths clear of the top-weight, Lo Night. Walkova was a weakening fourth. in front ? oin B to the first flight, but ran it down badly and carried Argive wide. The Oamaru horse did the same at the second flight, where De Bracey fell and brought down Trustworthy. Santee recaptured his lead leaving the straight, but ran off at the seven furlongs, leaving Lo Night and Milling Bay in the lead, with Hunt the Slipper, Argive, Walkova and Tisred following in close order. Walkova was closest to Milling Bay at the half-mile, but he felt the strain early in the run home, and Tisred passed him, easily drawing up to Milling Bay. Tisred quickly had the race in hand. Milling Bay was followed in at intervals by Lo Night, Walkova, Hunt the Slipper and Argive. Battling Finish Asunder was strongly challenged close to home by Mercenary Beau and Gay Romeo in the Lagmhor Stakes, but won by a short neck in a tight finish. Mercenary Beau beat Gay Romeo by half a head for second. Asunder was alongside Scarlet Pimpernel in the lead from the start, and Mercenary Beau and Gay Romeo moved through into the trailing positions going to the half-mile. Scarlet Pimpernel felt the strain and dropped out near the home turn and left Asunder clear going to the furlong. Mercenary Beau and Gay Romeo reduced Asunder’s lead near the end, but the Riccarton-trained Asunder ran the race out gamely. The others were beaten off. Gold Flame was the best of them, but was four lengths back. Golden Demonic, which lost a length at the start, was fifth, clear of the win favourite, Porcelain Prince, which improved only one position from the home turn.
Won Unchallenged Glen Carron led for the last five furlongs of the Lagmhor Stakes No. 2. He opened up a long lead near the home turn, and won decisively by a length from Skyrider, his only challenger.
Glen Carron, the runner-up to Arctic Sun over a mile at Riccarton a week earlier, was fourth at the end of a furlong, and ran past King Lyn into the lead nearing the five furlongs. He increased his lead at the half-mile, and had all the others in difficulties in the straight. Skyrider was fifth at the halfmile and ran on gamely under a hard ride for another minor placing in a record marked by a string of minor placings.
Port Lanyard was the best of the others, but was -a poor third five lengths behind Skyrider. He beat Sir Edwin just as easily. King Lyn was a length and a half behind Sir Edwin; then there were gaps to Belletavia, May Whistle, and Nugleam. May Whistle and Nugleam lost ground at the start, and Belletavia was a shade slow to move.
Strong Challenge Brookfields Lad, one of the tailenders at the five furlongs, sustained a strong run in the straight for a decisive win in the Eiffelton Hack Handicap. It was late when he caught the Grey mouth hack King’s Gold, but he won going away by three-quarters of a length to complete a double for P. H. C. Stock’s Orari stable, and a double for the Riccarton jockey, B. S. Finlayson. Lucky Dewar, the favourite, was running on for third, but two lengths behind King’s Gold. Positions changed quickly early in the race, but King’s Gold and Tour de Force worked clear going to the five furlongs, where Kotiti was trailing three lengths clear of De Rose and Consistent, which were passing Lucky Time.
Brookfields Lad and Lucky Dewar were then tailing the field. Tour de Force was beaten on the home turn, and King’s Gold worked clear of Kotiti, which held second position to the furlong. Consistent was third there, but Lucky Dewar, Brookfields Lad, and Lucky Time were stronger finishers. Brookfields Lad ran the last half furlong very strongly and passed King’s Gold close to home. Lucky Dewar beat Lucky Time by two lengths for third. Then there was a neck to Consistent, three lengths to the weakening Kotiti, and three lengths more to De Rose. Tour de Force faded to finish at the rear. Favourite’s Decisive Win Sun House carried top weight of 9-0 to a decisive win in the Chatmos Hack Handicap, for which she was favourite after her two successes at the Canterbury Jockey Club’s autumn meeting. Mr O. F. Watson’s four-year-old Sun King mare pulled fairly hard early in the race, when she was galloping on the outside of Tamarisk behind Silver Shower and Yue Chee. She passed Yue Chee into the trailing position going to the half mile, followed Silver Shower into the straight, and had the race in hand at the furlong, where Solstice was the only one of the others making much headway. Solstice was safely held by two lengths. He was about the middle of the field for a good way, but was clear in third position on the home turn. Solstice was two and a half lengths clear of Silver Shower, the outsider of the field. Arctic Sup, a stablemate of Silver Shower, was a length and a half back fourth, improving slightly for that placing. Fleur, one of the tail-enders for a good wav. was running on for fifth alongside Royal Pal, and just in front of Yue Chee. ‘ The second favourite, Tamarisk, weakened to eighth after getting the run of the race. Neptune’s Pride and Iroquoi were the last two to finish.
