Levies Fixed By Board Estimates of expenditure and rate charges for 1957-58 were approved at a meeting of the North Canterbury Catchment Board The rates wifi' 1 be confirmed at th.e next meeting. The secretary (Mr W. W. Brough) said that in the Wai-makariri-Eyre-Cust rating area rates would be fixed for the first time on the new classification. A comparison could not be made with last year’s rates, but. as ratepayers had already been told, they would benefit under the new arrangements. The rates will be:—Class A, 0.321 d; Class B, 0.215 d; Class C. 0.086 d; Class D, 0.0645 d; Class E, 0.043 d; Class F, 0.0215 d.

The Sefton-Ashley rate is reduced to 0.25 d on Class A and 0.125 d on Class B. The sevenyear term for the repayment of capital cost expired last year. The original understanding was that the maintenance rate would be half the capital rate. The original rate was 0.92 d on Class A and 0.46 d on Class B, but with increases in valuation the fraction was reduced to 0.5 d and 0.25 d until last year, when it was 0.33 d and 0.16 d.

The Ashley loan interest rate will be 0.025 d on Class A and 0.015 d on Class B. “This arrangement is designed to wipe it off,” said Dr. G. Jobberns, chairman of the finance committee.

Rates, which are unchanged, are:—

Administrative: 0.041 d. Ashley: Class A, 0.66 d; Class B. 0.4 d.

Halswell river: Class A, 0.8 d; Class B, 0.66 d; Class C, 0.525 d. Lake Ellesmere: Class A, 0.75 d; Class B, 0.4 d; Class C, 0.1875 d. Prices Valley: I.sd<i Ellesmere special area: Class A, 0.2 d; Class B, 0.03 d.

Selwyn river: Class A, 0.6 d; Class C, 0.48 d; Class D, 0.36 d; Class E, 0.24 d; Class F, 0.12 d. Main items of estimated expenditure approved included:—administration, £14,733; soil conservation, £4800; rivers control and drainage, £21,250; Waimakariri river, £43,976; Eyre river, £3787; Ashley river, £9703; and Halswell river, £8134.
