NEW ANGLICAN BOYS’ SCHOOL
Committee’*' Plan For Waikato “The Press” Special Service AUCKLAND, May 5. A Church of England secondary school for boys, probably in the Waikato, is now being planned. Although at a very early stage, proposals are for opening the school in 1959 with a roll of 100, expanding later to 500. A sum of £50,000 will probably be needed to found the school. The chairman of a 20-man steering committee, Dr. M. R. Fitchett, of Hamilton, said that a site had not yet been chosen but, if the plan materialised, it would probably be in the Waikato. “The initial response has been heartening, and if this continues we hope to set up a board of trustees and found the school,” he said. The committee had received inquiries from as far afield as Gisborne and Whakatane, and as yet only a sixth of 3000 information circulars had been distributed. He described the need for the school as “tremendous.”- Because there was no such school, Anglicans were entering their boys for the new £2.5 million Mormon College. The proposed school would not be limited to Anglicans, said Dr. Fitchett.
It was hoped that £50,000 would buy a site and put up buildings for; a roll of 100. Later, about £250.000 would be needed.
