SYDNEY MATCH
High Standard Of Play (N.Z. Press Association Copyright) (Rec. 9 p.m.) SYDNEY, May 5. Only a determined last-minute effort saved a strong Sydney City Rugby team, which included 12 internationals from defeat by Country in the annual match at North Sydney Oval yesterday. City won by 17 points to 9. The match showed that the All Elacks will find some tough opposition in their New South Wales country matches.
Coached by the former Waratah half-back, Wally Meagher, the Country team played thrilling football and led 9-3 until 15 minutes from full-time.
City lost the brilliant Wallaby flank forward. Keith Cross, in the first half with a badly cut leg. His place was taken by another of the 1955 Wallabies in New Zealand, Mac Hughes, who is making another strong bid for international honours. Stars of Match
Stars of the match were the Canberra winger, Peter Morton (who was. much more impressive than his opposite, the Wallaby winger, Edgar Stapleton, the City three-quarter, Rod Phelps, and the big experienced lock forwards, Alan Cameron and Tony Miller. Cameron will probably captain New South Wales and Australia against the All Blacks. In a second City-Country match, the Metropolitan side, led by another candidate for Australian captaincy, Bob Davidson, scored an easy win by 25 points to 3.
