EMPIRE VISITS BY QUEEN
(Rec. 9.30 p.m.) LONDON, May 4. The Queen ■shou M spend more time in Commonwealth countries, speakers suggested at today’s conference in London of the Conservative Commonwealth Council. The Queen should not be regarded c.s Britain’s private property but as Queen of the Commonwealth, speakers said. The council is an organisation of Right-wing bodies and individuals interested in Commonwealth affairs.
Mr Robert Vigars, a member of the courcil, asked: “Do we make it easy enough for the Queen to be Queen of the Commonwealth, rather than merely Queen of England?”
It would be very pleasant if other mem s of the Commonwealth could regard her more as their Queen than merely as Queen of England, he said. Arrangements should be made to enable her to spend more time in the Commonwealth. Sir Keith Officer, the former Australian Ambassador to France and China, said: “As an Australian I can say there is a very strong inclination here to regard the Queen as our private proyerty."
