“Egypt Could Run Canal”
(Rec. 9 p.m.) NEW YORK. May 3.
Lieutenant - General Raymond Wheeler, who directed United Nations salvage operations in the Suez Canal, said today that he was confident Egypt could operate the waterway efficiently, the United Press reported from Cairo.
The last four ships engaged in clearing the canal left for home yesterday. General Wheeler is to leave for New York tomorrow.
“I am certain that Egypt is anxious to maintain full, normal navigation of the Suez Canal,” General Wheeler said in an interview with the United Press today.
“The Egyptians are technically competent to handle everything pertaining to the canal’s operation. 1 wish Egypt success in operating the canal to the satisfaction of everybody,” he said.
