Models Of Earth Satellites Made
(Rec. 10 p.m.) WASHINGTON, May 2. The Naval Research Laboratory said yesterday that 12 full-scale magnesium test models of the proposed earth satellite already had been delivered to it.
The laboratory also announced that while most of the satellites to be launched into an orbit around the earth would be basket-ball-shaped, at least one will be non-spherical. Among their other functions, the artificial moons may be used to plot out the distribution and motion of clouds around the earth, the laboratory said. The launchings, to an altitude of 300 or more miles, were to take place within the next 20 months.
Mr Homer Newell, head of the laboratory’s satellite programme, said the 12 magnesium units, 20 inches in diameter, were built and assembled by a private firm. In addition, the naval laboratory itself had built and assembled an unspecified number of aluminium test models.
