Plymouth Plan To Impound Mayflower II
(Rec. 8 p.m.) BOSTON, May l.j Senator Newland Holmes, president of the Massachusetts State Senate, said today that the Mayflower 11, the British gift ship now on its way from Britain to the United States, would stay at Plymouth (Massachusetts) for the full two weeks as planned—or he would impound the ship. He said he would take this action even if the Mayflower II were late in arriving in the United States. Senator Holmes, who is a member of the Plymouth reception committee, and another member of the reception committee, Mr James A. Leland, announced that they would go to New York on Friday for a “showdown” meeting. “We will demand that the Mayflower stay at Plymouth the ftill length of time, whether New York
likes it or not,” Senator Holmes said.
The Mayflower is scheduled to arrive at Plymouth on May 25, but it is now believed she will be about seven to 10 days late. The New York committee suggested to the Plymouth committee that it keep the Mayflower for a week and then send it to New York for further exhibition.
Senator Holmes refused to say on what grounds the municipality of Plymouth could impound a British ship, but such talk is an indication of the rivalry between Plymouth and New York.
In legal circles it is thought that the Plymouth committee could place an attachment against the Mayflower if the ship failed to keep the verbal contract and written statements that she would remain at Plymouth for two weeks.
