DERAILMENTS IN OTAGO
Defective Sleepers Blamed (New Zealand Press Associationf WELLINGTON, May 2. Defective sleepers on the sharp curves of the Cromwell-Dunedin railway line had caused recent derailments, said the Minister of Railways (Mr J. K. McAlpine) this evening. Until reconditioning had been completed, neither diesel locomotives nor rail-cars would be operated on the ♦Otago Central railway. The work was expected to take about three months. Mr McAlpine said the hardwood sleepers holding the rails generally appeared to be in good condition, but close examination showed that on some of the curves the timber was deteriorating and the fastenings were not holding the rails as tightly as they should. This had caused the recent railcar derailments on sharp curves. Additional line staff would be recruited at once so that the reconditioning could be done as quickly as possible. Until the ballast was opened out from the line and all the sleepers closely examined it was not possible to say exactly how long reconditioning would take. Mr McAlpine said he hoped it would be possible to resume railcar operations in three months, but this would depend on the availability of staff and weather. MAICO Model ’•A.C.* .
