Rare Grey Teal Increasing In Numbers On N.Z. Lakes
(New Zealand Press Association)
WELLINGTON, May 2. The protected grey teal, one of New Zealand’s nrer ducks, is on the increase. The Minister of Internal Affairs 'Mi S. W. Smith) said today that duck-banding operations carried out by the Wildlife oranch had revealed that the teal seemed to be quite numerous on lakes in the lower Waikato valley and flocks of more than 100 had been seen on Lake Whangape. near Huntly. Mr Smith said he hoped the bird would increase sufficiently and be-
come available for inclusion in game bags of the future. But its future as a game bird depended on its protection now. “The game season opens this week-end and sportsmen are asked to take particular care in their shooting. A game licence only entitles the holder to shoot those species named in the licence,” he said.
The grey teal was first described in New Zealand by Sir Walter Buller in 1866, and has been regarded as one of New Zealand’s rarer waterfowl, although it is plentiful in Australia.
